There’s a story here, and I’m about to get real.
When I was a kid, I don’t know, around 4th grade or so, I had a friend. She had everything…like Guess jeans in every color. I wanted Guess jeans. My mama couldn’t buy Guess jeans for me in one color, let alone five. But I wanted those things. So. Badly.
I was convinced that those name brand jeans would make me cooler than I was, or cooler than I felt.
In my family, we bought jeans on the clearance rack or at thrift stores. Friends didn’t know. I did a good job of making my bargain clothes look pretty cool. Creativity runs deep and starts early, so I thrifted until I found myself ONE pair of Guess jeans. I carefully removed that little triangle patch on the butt and sewed it on every morning to which ever pair of jeans I saw fit to wear. Voila! I had “Guess” jeans in 5 colors, too!
I was found out, and then lied about it. There are all manner of things wrong with that picture, and we won’t get into dissecting my childhood woes. But looking back, I am actually amazed at how resourceful I was at the age of 9. And here’s the thing…
I have spent a lifetime trying to have Guess jeans with a thrift store price tag. When I got older, I set out to make my home a place that felt good, but I didn’t always have the budget to execute what I wanted without a little bit of work and a whole lot of creativity. If creativity is your hang up, today’s the day I’m giving mine out for free, here we go!
I go in homes every day where the mamas want a look they see in the blogs, on Pinterest, or wherever they find their inspiration. They want the throw pillows.
But if you outfit a couch with four throw pillows from Pottery Barn, you’ve just set your self back about $300. $150 if you shop at Target. Maybe you can, maybe you can’t throw that cash down for new throw pillows. Maybe you just don’t want to? So ladies, I’m about to tell you how to get the throw pillows for not much more than that latte you just overspent on (thrift store completely optional).
Go to Pottery Barn, or wherever, don’t get all picky on me!
Pick out the prettiest throw pillows/fabric you see to get inspired.
Then go over to the tableware section. Did you know they sell napkins in that SAME fabric?? Those napkins are a few dollars a piece!
Buy one, or two, depending on how many you have the cash for.
Go home and find a neutral fabric, like a cotton/linen that goes with anything. Don’t over-think this, use one of your hubby’s shirts he has in the Goodwill pile, or an old pair of Guess jeans that you don’t wear because you’re an adult now and you realize those high dollar jeans don’t mean a thing…you just wear the ones that make your butt look good.
Sew a square of that fabric to the the square of your napkin and cover that old, tired throw pillow you hate that’s on your sofa and make yourself one that you love…call it your “Pottery Barn” throw pillow.
Girls, the pillows won’t make you cool, they won’t even make you happy past tomorrow. But they could make your room a little happier. And they can make your space feel like it got a new pair of earrings and we all know that mamas feels better when we’re wearing new earrings. Or a new pair of skinny jeans.
